Composition
- Amoxicillin trihydrate equivalent to 400 mg amoxicillin
- Potassium clavulanate equivalent to 57 mg clavulanic acid
- Ratio: 7:1
- Form: Powder for oral suspension (after mixing with water)
Indication / Use
Used for treatment of bacterial infections, including:
- Ear infections (otitis media)
- Sinusitis
- Tonsillitis
- Chest infections / pneumonia
- Bronchitis
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Dental infections
- Bone and joint infections
It is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic + beta-lactamase inhibitor.
Direction of Use
- Usually taken by mouth
- Commonly given twice daily (every 12 hours) as prescribed
- Best taken:
- Shake bottle well before each use
- Use measuring syringe/spoon for accurate dosing
- Complete the full course, even if symptoms improve early
Side Effects
Common:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea or vomiting
- Stomach upset
- Rash
- Thrush (fungal infection)
Less common:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Mild liver enzyme elevation
Serious (rare):
- Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
- Severe skin reactions
- Liver problems/jaundice
- Severe diarrhea due to C. difficile infection
Warnings
- Do NOT use if allergic to:
- Penicillins
- Amoxicillin
- Clavulanic acid
- Use cautiously in:
- Liver disease
- Kidney disease
- History of antibiotic-associated colitis
- Can cause severe allergy in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Antibiotics should not be used unnecessarily (resistance risk)
Interactions
May interact with:
- Warfarin (increased bleeding risk)
- Methotrexate
- Allopurinol (higher rash risk)
- Probenecid
- Oral contraceptives (possible reduced effectiveness in some cases)
Caution
- Refrigeration may be recommended after reconstitution (depends on brand instructions)
- Suspension usually expires within 7–10 days after mixing
- Drink plenty of fluids during treatment
- Seek medical attention if:
- Severe rash develops
- Breathing difficulty occurs
- Severe diarrhea persists
- Do not share antibiotics with others
