Composition
- Dextromethorphan hydrobromide
- Sucrose
- Liquid glucose
- Sorbitol
- Ethanol (alcohol)
- Sodium benzoate
- Propylene glycol
Some formulations may also contain:
- Glycerol
- Menthol
- Diphenhydramine (in certain variants)
Uses / Indications
- Dry cough
- Tickly cough
- Irritating cough
- Sore throat
- Non-productive cough
Acts mainly as a cough suppressant (antitussive).
Direction of Use
- Adults and children over 12 years: 10 ml up to 4 times daily
- Some glycerol-based formulations may be used from age 1 year
- Shake well before use
- Oral use only
- Do not exceed recommended dose
Side Effects
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Stomach discomfort
- Dry mouth
- Blurred vision
- Allergic reactions
- Diarrhea
- Headache
High doses may cause:
- Hallucinations
- Confusion
- Respiratory depression
- Serotonin syndrome
Warnings / Precautions
- May cause drowsiness; avoid driving or operating machinery
- Contains sugar and alcohol
- Use cautiously in diabetes
- Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine
- Consult a doctor during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Seek medical advice if cough persists more than a few days
Drug Interactions
- MAO inhibitors (MAOIs)
- Antidepressants (SSRIs/SNRIs)
- Alcohol
- Sedatives
- Other cough or cold medicines
Combining with certain antidepressants may increase risk of serotonin syndrome.
Contraindications / Caution
- Allergy to dextromethorphan or other ingredients
- Children under recommended age
- Respiratory failure or severe asthma
- Severe liver disease
- Use with MAOIs within the last 14 days
