Composition
CalCough Infant Syrup contains:
- Glycerol (main active ingredient) → soothing agent that coats and protects the throat
It does NOT contain strong cough suppressants or antibiotics. It is a simple soothing syrup.
Uses / Indications
- Relief of dry, tickly cough in infants and young children
- Soothes throat irritation from colds
- Helps reduce coughing caused by dryness or minor throat inflammation
- Suitable for children from 3 months to 5 years
Direction of Use
- 3 months – 1 year: 5 ml, 3–4 times daily
- 1 – 5 years: 10 ml (2 × 5 ml), 3–4 times daily
- Oral use only
- Do not exceed recommended dose
- Do not use in babies under 3 months (calpol.co.uk)
Side Effects
Usually very mild:
- Loose stools or mild diarrhoea (due to glycerol/sweeteners)
- Stomach discomfort (rare)
- Very rare allergic reactions (rash, irritation)
Overdose may cause:
- Diarrhoea or gastrointestinal upset
Warnings / Precautions
- Contains glycerol and sweeteners → may affect blood sugar in diabetics
- May cause mild laxative effect
- Stop and seek advice if:
- cough lasts more than 3 days
- symptoms worsen
- Not suitable for infants under 3 months
- Use caution if child has sugar intolerance
Drug Interactions
- No significant drug interactions reported
- Safe to use with most common paediatric medicines (if used correctly)
Contraindications / Caution
Avoid if:
- Allergy to glycerol or ingredients
- Infant under 3 months
- Suspected serious infection (fever, breathing difficulty, persistent cough)
