Composition

Commonly contains:

  • Ciprofloxacin – antibiotic (fluoroquinolone)
  • Tinidazole – antiprotozoal and anaerobic antibacterial agent

Strength may vary by manufacturer (commonly Ciprofloxacin 500 mg + Tinidazole 600 mg).

 

Uses / Indications

Used for mixed bacterial and protozoal infections such as:

  • Diarrhea and dysentery
  • Amoebiasis
  • Gastrointestinal infections
  • Typhoid with intestinal infection
  • Dental infections
  • Pelvic infections
  • Gynaecological infections
  • Certain urinary or abdominal infections

 

Direction for Use

  • Usually taken after food
  • Swallow whole with water
  • Take exactly as prescribed by a doctor
  • Complete the full treatment course
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 72 hours after finishing tinidazole

 

Side Effects

Common side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness

 

Serious side effects:

  • Tendon pain or rupture
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Seizures
  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Severe diarrhea
  • Liver problems
  • Irregular heartbeat

 

Warnings

  • Avoid alcohol because tinidazole may cause severe reaction:
    • Vomiting
    • Flushing
    • Rapid heartbeat
  • Ciprofloxacin may increase tendon injury risk
  • Use cautiously in:
    • Kidney disease
    • Liver disease
    • Epilepsy
    • Elderly patients

Interactions

 

May interact with:

  • Alcohol
  • Antacids
  • Iron or zinc supplements
  • Warfarin and blood thinners
  • Diabetes medications
  • Steroids
  • Theophylline
  • Certain heart rhythm medications

 

Cautions / Precautions

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure
  • Do not drive if dizzy
  • Inform doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Stop and seek medical care if:
    • Tendon pain occurs
    • Severe diarrhea develops
    • Allergic symptoms appear
    • Numbness or nerve symptoms occur
