Composition

• Active ingredient: Clarithromycin 500 mg
• Drug class: Macrolide antibiotic

Indication / Uses

Used for:

• Bacterial infections such as:
• Respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis)
• Throat and tonsil infections
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• H. pylori eradication (stomach ulcer treatment) in combination therapy

Direction of Use

• Usually taken twice daily (every 12 hours) or as prescribed
• Can be taken with or without food (food may reduce stomach upset)
• Swallow with water
• Complete the full course even if symptoms improve

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

• Nausea or vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal pain
• Taste disturbance (metallic taste)
• Headache

Serious side effects (seek medical help):

• Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)
• Severe diarrhea (possible C. difficile infection)
• Liver problems (yellowing of eyes/skin, dark urine)
• Irregular heartbeat (QT prolongation)

Warnings

• Use cautiously in patients with liver or kidney disease
• May cause heart rhythm abnormalities in susceptible patients
• Do not use unnecessarily for viral infections (e.g., cold/flu)
• Resistance may develop if course is not completed

Interactions

May interact with:

• Statins (e.g., simvastatin, atorvastatin)
• Blood thinners (e.g., warfarin)
• Antiarrhythmic drugs
• Some antidepressants
• Antifungal medicines
• Colchicine (can be dangerous in kidney/liver disease)
• Other QT-prolonging drugs

Caution

• Avoid alcohol if it worsens stomach upset
• Inform doctor about all current medications
• Use only under prescription
