Composition

  • Clotrimazole 1% w/w (10 mg per gram of cream)

Use / Indications

Used for fungal skin infections such as:

  • Ringworm (Tinea corporis)
  • Athlete's foot (Tinea pedis)
  • Jock itch (Tinea cruris)
  • Fungal skin folds (intertrigo)
  • Cutaneous candidiasis (yeast infections of the skin)
  • Pityriasis (Tinea) versicolor

 

Mechanism of Action

Clotrimazole kills fungi by disrupting the fungal cell membrane, causing leakage of essential cell contents and preventing fungal growth.

 

Direction of Use

  • Wash and dry the affected area thoroughly.
  • Apply a thin layer to the affected skin and surrounding area.
  • Usually apply 2–3 times daily.

 

Duration of treatment:

  • Athlete's foot: Up to 4 weeks
  • Ringworm: 3–4 weeks
  • Jock itch: 2–4 weeks
  • Candidal skin infections: Usually 2–4 weeks

Continue treatment for at least 2 weeks after symptoms improve to reduce recurrence.

 

Common Side Effects

  • Mild burning
  • Stinging
  • Itching
  • Skin redness
  • Irritation
  • Dry skin

 

Serious Side Effects

Seek medical attention if:

  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Extensive rash
  • Swelling of face, lips, or throat
  • Severe blistering

 

Warnings

Do NOT use:

  • In the eyes
  • Inside the mouth
  • On the scalp unless directed by a healthcare professional
  • If allergic to clotrimazole or any ingredient

 

Important warnings:

  • For external use only.
  • Not effective against bacterial or viral infections.
  • If symptoms worsen or fail to improve, seek medical advice.

 

Drug Interactions

  • Significant interactions are unlikely with topical use.
