Composition
- Active ingredients:
- Brimonidine tartrate 0.2%
- Timolol maleate 0.5%
- Ophthalmic (eye drop) solution
Indication / Use
Used for:
- Reduction of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP)
- Treatment of:
- Open-angle glaucoma
- Ocular hypertension
Usually prescribed when a single medication is not sufficient.
Direction of Use
- Instill 1 drop into affected eye(s)
- Usually twice daily about 12 hours apart
- If using other eye medications, allow at least 5 minutes between drops
- Remove contact lenses before use and reinsert after about 15 minutes
Side Effects
Common side effects:
- Eye redness
- Burning or stinging sensation
- Dry eyes
- Blurred vision
- Drowsiness
- Headache
- Dry mouth
Possible serious side effects:
- Slow heartbeat (bradycardia)
- Difficulty breathing
- Chest pain
- Severe allergic reaction
- Low blood pressure
- Fainting
Warnings
- Contraindicated in patients with:
- Asthma
- Severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Sinus bradycardia
- Heart block
- Heart failure
- Avoid use in patients allergic to brimonidine or timolol
- May mask symptoms of low blood sugar in diabetics
- May worsen muscle weakness in myasthenia gravis
Interactions
May interact with:
- Beta-blockers
- Antihypertensive medications
- Digoxin
- Calcium channel blockers
- CNS depressants
- MAO inhibitors
- Antidepressants
- Insulin and oral antidiabetic drugs
Caution
- Use cautiously in:
- Elderly patients
- Diabetics
- Patients with cardiovascular disease
- Patients with respiratory disorders
- Avoid driving if vision becomes blurred or dizziness occurs
- Do not touch dropper tip to avoid contamination
- Inform doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding
