Composition
- Povidone-iodine (iodinated povidone) → broad-spectrum antiseptic
- Metronidazole → antibacterial + antiprotozoal (especially anaerobic bacteria)
Drug class:
- Topical antiseptic + anti-infective combination
Uses / Indications
Used for infected or at-risk wounds, such as:
- Minor cuts and wounds
- Burns (mild to moderate)
- Ulcers and infected sores
- Bed sores (pressure ulcers)
- Skin infections involving bacteria (especially anaerobic bacteria)
- Post-surgical wound care (as prescribed)
It helps:
- Kill bacteria and reduce infection
- Clean contaminated wounds
- Support wound healing
Direction for Use
- For external use only
- Clean the affected area first
- Apply a thin layer to the wound/affected skin
- Usually applied 1–2 times daily (or as directed)
- Cover with sterile dressing if advised
- Wash hands before and after use
Side Effects
Common:
- Mild burning or stinging
- Temporary redness
- Skin irritation or dryness
Less common:
- Allergic skin reaction (itching, rash, swelling)
- Skin staining (from iodine)
Rare:
- Severe allergic reaction (very uncommon)
Warnings
- Do NOT use on:
- Large open wounds for long periods without medical supervision
- Deep severe burns unless prescribed
- Avoid use in:
- Known iodine allergy
- Thyroid disorders (prolonged use may affect thyroid function)
- Avoid covering large areas for long periods
Interactions
- Minimal systemic interactions (topical use)
- Avoid combining with other strong topical antiseptics unless advised
- Caution if using other iodine-containing products
Cautions
Use carefully in:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women (especially prolonged use)
- Children (limited area and duration)
- Patients with thyroid disease
- Large or long-term wound treatment
