Composition
It is a stimulant laxative.
Uses / Indications
Used for:
- Constipation (main use)
- Short-term relief of infrequent or difficult bowel movements
- Bowel emptying before medical procedures (e.g. colonoscopy)
It works by stimulating the muscles of the large intestine and increasing water in the bowel to push stool out.
Direction of Use
- Adults (18 years and above):
- 1–2 tablets (5–10 mg) once daily, usually at night
- Swallow whole with water (do not chew)
- Works in about 6–12 hours (usually next morning)
- Short-term use only (not for continuous daily use)
Side Effects
Common:
- Abdominal cramps
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Bloating
Less common:
- Dehydration
- Electrolyte imbalance (low potassium)
- Dependence if overused
Warnings / Precautions
- Do NOT use if you have:
- bowel obstruction
- severe abdominal pain
- appendicitis symptoms
- Avoid long-term use → can cause bowel dependence
- Take with water only (avoid milk/antacids around the same time)
- Stop if severe cramps or diarrhoea occurs
Drug Interactions
- Antacids or milk → may reduce effect
- Diuretics → electrolyte imbalance risk
- Steroids → increased potassium loss
- Other laxatives → excessive bowel effect
Contraindications / Caution
Avoid if:
- Allergy to bisacodyl
- Intestinal obstruction or severe dehydration
- Acute abdominal conditions
- Inflammatory bowel disease flare (unless advised)
