Composition

Use / Indications
Used for:
- Occasional constipation
- Bowel evacuation before certain medical procedures (when prescribed)
- Relief of hard stools and difficulty passing stool
Mechanism of Action
Bisacodyl acts directly on the bowel wall to:
- Stimulate bowel movements
- Increase water in the intestines
- Soften stools and promote evacuation
Direction of Use
Adults and children ≥12 years:
- Insert 1 suppository (10 mg) rectally once daily when needed.
Instructions:
- Remove the foil wrapper.
- Insert the suppository pointed end first into the rectum.
- Try to retain it for about 15–20 minutes.
- For rectal use only; do not swallow.
Onset of Action
- Usually works within 15–60 minutes.
- Some users may experience bowel movement within 10–30 minutes.
Common Side Effects
- Abdominal cramps
- Rectal burning
- Mild stomach discomfort
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Faintness or dizziness
Serious Side Effects
Seek medical attention if you experience:
- Rectal bleeding
- Severe abdominal pain
- Persistent diarrhea
- Severe allergic reaction
- Failure to have a bowel movement after use
Warnings
Do NOT use if:
- You have intestinal obstruction (blocked bowel).
- You have severe abdominal pain with nausea or vomiting.
- You have appendicitis or acute inflammatory bowel disease.
- You are severely dehydrated.
- You are allergic to bisacodyl.
Drug Interactions
Use cautiously with:
- Diuretics ("water tablets")
- Corticosteroids
- Digoxin
- Other laxatives
- Medicines that may affect electrolyte balance
Cautions
- Do not use for more than 7 days without medical advice.
- Do not use for weight loss.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- If constipation persists, seek medical evaluation.
