Composition
- Active ingredient: Sodium valproate 200 mg
- Drug class: Antiepileptic (mood stabilizer / anticonvulsant)
Indication / Uses
Used for:
- Epilepsy (various seizure types)
- Bipolar disorder (mood stabilization)
- Prevention of migraine (in some patients)
Direction of Use
- Take exactly as prescribed
- Usually taken 1–2 times daily
- Can be taken with or after food to reduce stomach upset
- Swallow with water
- Do not stop suddenly without medical advice
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Drowsiness
- Weight gain
- Tremor (shaking)
- Nausea or vomiting
- Hair thinning
- Dizziness
Serious side effects (seek medical help):
- Liver problems (yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine)
- Pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain)
- Severe drowsiness or confusion
- Bleeding or easy bruising (low platelets)
Warnings
- High risk of liver toxicity, especially in young children or early treatment period
- Can cause serious birth defects if used during pregnancy
- Regular blood tests (liver function, platelets) may be required
- Do not stop abruptly (risk of seizures or relapse)
Interactions
May interact with:
- Other anticonvulsants
- Alcohol (increases sedation)
- Antidepressants
- Aspirin (may increase valproate levels)
- Warfarin (may affect bleeding risk)
Caution
- Avoid alcohol
- Use effective contraception in women of childbearing age
- Monitor weight and mood changes
- Use cautiously in liver disease or metabolic disorders
