Composition
- Esomeprazole 20 mg
- Drug class: Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI)
Uses / Indications
Used to reduce stomach acid in conditions such as:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD/acid reflux)
- Heartburn
- Gastric and duodenal ulcers
- Gastritis
- Prevention of ulcers caused by NSAIDs (e.g., diclofenac)
- Part of treatment for Helicobacter pylori infection (combined with antibiotics)
- Zollinger–Ellison syndrome
Direction for Use
- Usually taken once daily
- Best taken 30–60 minutes before meals, especially before breakfast
- Swallow capsule/tablet whole
- Do not crush or chew enteric-coated forms
- Duration depends on condition being treated
Side Effects
Common:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Gas/bloating
Less common:
Long-term / serious risks:
- Low magnesium levels
- Vitamin B12 deficiency
- Increased risk of fractures (long-term use)
- Kidney problems
- Increased risk of certain intestinal infections
Warnings
- Long-term use should be medically supervised
- May mask symptoms of serious stomach disease
- Use caution in severe liver disease
- Do not use unnecessarily for long periods
Interactions
May interact with:
- Clopidogrel (may reduce effectiveness)
- Warfarin
- Iron supplements (reduced absorption)
- Certain antifungals requiring stomach acid for absorption
- Methotrexate (high-dose)
Cautions
Use carefully in:
- Elderly patients
- Liver disease
- Patients on long-term therapy
- Patients with osteoporosis risk
Monitoring may be needed for prolonged use:
- Magnesium
- Vitamin B12
- Kidney function
