Composition
- Active ingredient: Sodium Chloride 0.65% w/v (saline solution)
- Preservative: Often Benzalkonium chloride (varies by brand)
- Form: Sterile nasal drops/saline solution
Indication / Use
Used for:
- Nasal congestion (blocked nose)
- Dry nasal passages
- Nasal irritation from:
- Common cold
- Allergies/hay fever
- Dry air or dust exposure
- Helps:
- Loosen mucus
- Moisturize nasal lining
- Improve breathing
It is a saline moisturizer, not an antibiotic or steroid.
Direction of Use
- Tilt head slightly backward
- Instill:
- 1–2 drops in each nostril as needed
- Infants may use 1 drop each nostril
- Avoid touching the nozzle to the nose
- Can be used several times daily if required
- Blow or clean nose gently after a few minutes
Side Effects
Common:
- Mild nasal irritation
- Sneezing
- Cough
- Temporary unusual taste in mouth
Rare:
- Burning sensation
- Increased nasal irritation
- Allergic reaction (very uncommon)
Warnings
- For nasal use only
- Do not share bottle with others
- Stop use if:
- Severe irritation develops
- Swelling or bleeding occurs
- Avoid contamination of dropper tip
- Use within recommended time after opening
Interactions
Generally very safe with minimal interactions.
Possible caution with:
- Lithium
- Tolvaptan
(because of sodium content, though nasal absorption is very low)
Caution
- Usually safe in:
- Infants
- Children
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Does NOT provide instant decongestant effect like xylometazoline sprays
- Persistent congestion may indicate:
- Sinus infection
- Allergic rhinitis
- Enlarged adenoids/nasal polyps
- Overuse is generally safer than medicated decongestant sprays because saline does not cause rebound congestion
