Composition

Each sachet contains:

  • Ispaghula husk (Psyllium husk) 3.5 g → natural bulk-forming fibre laxative

Other ingredients may include:

  • Sodium bicarbonate / potassium bicarbonate
  • Citric acid
  • Sweeteners (e.g. aspartame)
  • Flavouring agents (orange or lemon) (turn0search0, turn0search1)

 

Uses / Indications

  • Constipation (main use)
  • Helps maintain regular bowel movements
  • Softens stool and increases stool bulk
  • Used in:
    • haemorrhoids (piles)
    • low-fibre diets
    • chronic constipation management

It is a bulk-forming laxative, meaning it works naturally by increasing fibre in the gut.


 

Direction of Use

  • Adults & children over 12 years: 1 sachet morning and evening
  • Children 6–12 years: half to one dose as directed
  • Must be mixed with at least 150 ml of water
  • Drink immediately after mixing
  • Works in 12–24 hours (turn0search1)

 

Side Effects

Common:

  • Bloating
  • Wind (gas)
  • Mild abdominal discomfort (especially at start)

Less common but important:

  • Allergic reactions (rash, breathing difficulty)
  • Choking or blockage if taken without enough water
  • Worsening constipation if fluid intake is low (turn0search1)

 

Warnings / Precautions

  • MUST be taken with plenty of water
  • Do NOT take dry (risk of choking/intestinal blockage)
  • Avoid if:
    • bowel obstruction
    • severe difficulty swallowing
  • Separate from other medicines by 30–60 minutes (or 1–2 hours in some guidance) because it can reduce absorption
  • Stop and seek advice if no bowel movement after 3 days

 

Drug Interactions

Can reduce absorption of:

  • Iron supplements
  • Antibiotics
  • Thyroid medicines
  • Heart medicines (e.g. digoxin)
  • Lithium

Take other medicines at a different time.


 

Contraindications / Caution

Avoid if:

  • Intestinal blockage
  • Severe constipation with unknown cause
  • Allergy to ispaghula (psyllium)
  • Difficulty swallowing or risk of choking
