Composition

  • Active ingredient: Metformin hydrochloride 1 g (1000 mg)

Indication / Uses

Used for:

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Lowering and controlling blood glucose levels
  • Sometimes used in insulin resistance (e.g., polycystic ovary syndrome)

 

Direction of Use

  • Usually taken once or twice daily (sometimes up to three times as prescribed)
  • Take with or after meals to reduce stomach upset
  • Swallow whole with water
  • Take at the same time each day
  • Do not skip doses

 

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Loss of appetite
  • Metallic taste in mouth

Serious side effects (seek medical help):

  • Lactic acidosis (rare but serious: weakness, fast breathing, confusion, severe fatigue)
  • Severe dehydration or persistent vomiting

 

Warnings

  • Risk of lactic acidosis increases in kidney, liver, or severe illness
  • Kidney function should be monitored regularly
  • May need to be stopped temporarily before contrast imaging tests
  • Avoid excessive alcohol use

 

Interactions

May interact with:

  • Alcohol (increases risk of lactic acidosis)
  • Diuretics (water tablets)
  • Corticosteroids
  • Certain blood pressure medicines
  • Iodinated contrast agents (for scans)
