Indication / Uses
Used for:
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Lowering and controlling blood glucose levels
- Sometimes used in insulin resistance (e.g., polycystic ovary syndrome)
Direction of Use
- Usually taken once or twice daily (sometimes up to three times as prescribed)
- Take with or after meals to reduce stomach upset
- Swallow whole with water
- Take at the same time each day
- Do not skip doses
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal discomfort
- Loss of appetite
- Metallic taste in mouth
Serious side effects (seek medical help):
- Lactic acidosis (rare but serious: weakness, fast breathing, confusion, severe fatigue)
- Severe dehydration or persistent vomiting
Warnings
- Risk of lactic acidosis increases in kidney, liver, or severe illness
- Kidney function should be monitored regularly
- May need to be stopped temporarily before contrast imaging tests
- Avoid excessive alcohol use
Interactions
May interact with:
- Alcohol (increases risk of lactic acidosis)
- Diuretics (water tablets)
- Corticosteroids
- Certain blood pressure medicines
- Iodinated contrast agents (for scans)
Caution
- Use cautiously in elderly patients
- Monitor blood sugar regularly
- Not suitable in severe kidney impairment
