Use / Indications

Used for:

  • Vaginal yeast infections (vulvovaginal candidiasis)
  • Vaginal itching
  • Vaginal burning
  • Thick white vaginal discharge associated with fungal infection
  • Relief of discomfort caused by Candida infections

 

Mechanism of Action

Miconazole inhibits the production of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. This damages the fungal cell membrane and kills or inhibits the growth of the fungus.

 

Direction of Use

Typical dosage:

  • Insert 1 pessary into the vagina at bedtime for 3 consecutive nights or as directed by a healthcare professional.

Instructions:

  1. Wash hands before and after use.
  2. Insert the pessary high into the vagina, preferably while lying down at bedtime.
  3. Complete the full course even if symptoms improve early.
  4. Avoid intercourse during treatment if possible.

 

Common Side Effects

  • Vaginal irritation
  • Burning sensation
  • Itching
  • Mild discomfort
  • Increased vaginal discharge while the pessary dissolves

 

Serious Side Effects

Seek medical attention if:

  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Swelling of the face, lips, or throat

  • Severe pelvic pain
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding

 

Warnings

Do NOT use:

  • If allergic to miconazole or other imidazole antifungals.
  • For conditions that have not been diagnosed as a fungal infection.
  • Without medical advice if pregnant.

Important warnings:

  • For vaginal use only.

  • May weaken latex condoms and diaphragms temporarily.

 

Drug Interactions
