Composition
Each 5 ml typically contains:
- Guaifenesin 50 mg → expectorant (loosens and thins mucus)
- Bromhexine hydrochloride 4 mg → mucolytic (breaks down thick phlegm)
- Phenylephrine hydrochloride 5 mg → decongestant (relieves blocked nose and sinus pressure)
This is a triple-action chesty cough medicine for adults.
Uses / Indications
- Chesty (productive) cough with mucus
- Thick or sticky phlegm in the chest
- Bronchitis-like symptoms
- Cold/flu with chest congestion
- Blocked nose and sinus congestion
Direction of Use
- Adults and children 12 years and above
- Usual dose: 10–15 ml every 6–8 hours as needed
- Maximum: 4 doses in 24 hours
- Short-term use only
- Do not exceed recommended dose
Side Effects
Possible effects include:
- Nausea or stomach upset
- Headache or dizziness
- Dry mouth
- Restlessness or insomnia
- Increased heart rate or palpitations (phenylephrine effect)
- Allergic reactions (rare)
Warnings / Precautions
- May increase blood pressure (phenylephrine)
- Avoid alcohol (worsens side effects)
- Use cautiously in:
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- Thyroid disorders
- Glaucoma
- Prostate enlargement
- Do NOT use with MAO inhibitors (dangerous interaction)
- Avoid combining with other decongestants or cough syrups
Drug Interactions
- MAO inhibitors → severe hypertension risk
- Other decongestants → overstimulation
- Antidepressants (SSRIs/TCAs) → increased side effects
- Blood pressure medicines → reduced effectiveness
- Alcohol → worsened side effects
Contraindications / Caution
Avoid if:
- Allergy to guaifenesin, bromhexine, or phenylephrine
- Severe hypertension or heart disease
- Severe liver or kidney disease
- Hyperthyroidism
- Glaucoma
- Recent MAOI use (within 14 days)
