Composition
Each 5 ml typically contains:
- Dextromethorphan hydrobromide 10 mg → cough suppressant (reduces cough reflex in the brain)
- Menthol 2.4 mg → soothes throat irritation and gives cooling effect
This is a non-productive (dry) cough suppressant syrup.
Uses / Indications
- Dry, irritating (non-productive) cough
- Cough caused by minor throat irritation or common cold
- Throat tickle and coughing fits
- Helps reduce night-time coughing so sleep is easier
Direction of Use
- Adults and children 12 years and over
- Usual dose: 5 ml every 4–6 hours as needed
- Maximum: 4 doses in 24 hours
- Short-term use only
- Do not exceed recommended dose
Side Effects
Common:
- Mild dizziness
- Nausea or stomach upset
- Drowsiness (in some people)
- Dry mouth
Less common:
- Confusion (at high doses)
- Skin rash or allergy
- Restlessness
Warnings / Precautions
- Avoid alcohol (can increase drowsiness)
- Do NOT combine with other cough syrups containing dextromethorphan
- Use cautiously in:
- asthma
- liver disease
- elderly patients
- Stop and seek advice if cough lasts more than a few days or worsens
- Avoid driving if you feel dizzy or drowsy
Drug Interactions
- MAO inhibitors (dangerous interaction → serotonin syndrome risk)
- SSRIs / SNRIs / tricyclic antidepressants
- Other dextromethorphan-containing medicines
- Alcohol and sedatives
- Other cough/cold medicines
Contraindications / Caution
Avoid if:
- Allergy to dextromethorphan or menthol
- Recent MAOI use (within 14 days)
- Severe respiratory problems without medical supervision
- Children under recommended age
