Composition
Each 5 ml typically contains:
- Dextromethorphan hydrobromide 10 mg → cough suppressant (reduces cough reflex)
- Chlorpheniramine maleate 4 mg → antihistamine (relieves runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes)
This makes it a dual-action dry cough + allergy relief syrup.
Uses / Indications
- Dry, tickly (non-productive) cough
- Cough due to colds or throat irritation
- Allergy-related symptoms such as:
- sneezing
- runny nose
- watery eyes
- Helps children sleep better by reducing night coughing
Direction of Use
- Children 6–12 years: 5 ml (1 teaspoon)
- Frequency: up to 3 times daily
- Short-term use only
- Do not exceed recommended dose
Side Effects
Common:
- Drowsiness (from antihistamine)
- Dry mouth
- Mild dizziness
- Nausea or stomach upset
Less common:
- Skin rash or allergic reaction
- Blurred vision (rare)
Warnings / Precautions
- May cause sleepiness → avoid activities needing alertness
- Do not combine with other cough/cold medicines containing:
- antihistamines
- dextromethorphan
- Use caution in:
- asthma
- glaucoma
- heart disease
- Stop and seek medical advice if:
- cough lasts more than a few days
- fever or breathing difficulty develops
Drug Interactions
- Other antihistamines → increased drowsiness
- Sedatives → excessive sedation
- MAO inhibitors → dangerous interaction risk
- Other dextromethorphan-containing medicines → overdose risk
Contraindications / Caution
- Allergy to dextromethorphan or chlorpheniramine
- Severe respiratory disease (use only under medical advice)
- Very young children below recommended age
- Use with multiple cold medicines at the same time
