Composition
- Lactulose (synthetic disaccharide sugar)
It is an osmotic laxative. Lactulose is not digested in the small intestine; it reaches the colon where it draws water into the bowel to soften stool and increase bowel movement.
Uses / Indications
- Constipation (main use)
- Chronic or occasional hard stools
- Also used medically (in higher doses) for:
- Hepatic encephalopathy (liver-related toxin buildup causing confusion)
In simple terms:
- Makes stool soft + easier to pass
- Helps restore regular bowel movement
Direction of Use
- Taken orally as a syrup
- Usually once or twice daily (dose varies by age/condition)
- Can be mixed with water or juice if needed
- Effect usually starts in 24–48 hours
Side Effects
Common:
- Bloating
- Gas (flatulence)
- Abdominal cramps
- Nausea
- Loose stools/diarrhea if dose is high
Less common / important:
- Dehydration (from excessive diarrhea)
- Electrolyte imbalance (low potassium if overused)
Warnings / Precautions
- Do NOT overuse → can cause diarrhea and dehydration
- Use caution in:
- Diabetes (contains sugar-like compounds)
- Dehydration or electrolyte imbalance risk
- If severe abdominal pain occurs → seek medical advice
- Do not combine unnecessarily with other laxatives unless instructed
Drug Interactions
- Other laxatives → excessive bowel effect
- Certain antibiotics → may reduce lactulose effectiveness
- Diuretics (water tablets) → increased risk of electrolyte loss
Contraindications / Caution
Avoid if:
- Suspected bowel obstruction
- Allergy to lactulose
- Severe unexplained abdominal pain
