Composition
Mucolex Expectorant (5%) contains:
- Carbocisteine 5% (usually 250 mg/5 ml) → mucolytic agent
Carbocisteine is a mucus regulator and mucus thinner. It works by reducing the thickness and stickiness of sputum so it can be coughed out more easily.
Uses / Indications
- Chesty (productive) cough with thick mucus
- Bronchitis (acute or chronic)
- Excess or sticky phlegm in airways
- Respiratory tract conditions with abnormal mucus production
- Helps clear chest congestion and improve breathing
Direction of Use
- Usually taken 2–3 times daily (depending on age and prescription)
- Can be taken with or after food to reduce stomach upset
- Measure dose accurately with spoon/cup
- Short-term use unless prescribed longer by a doctor
Side Effects
Common:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Stomach discomfort
- Diarrhea
Less common:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Skin rash or allergic reaction
Rare:
- Severe allergic reactions (swelling, breathing difficulty)
Warnings / Precautions
- Use cautiously in people with stomach ulcers
- May irritate the stomach if taken on empty stomach
- Avoid if allergic to carbocisteine
- Use caution in diabetes (may contain sugar depending on formulation)
- Seek medical advice if cough lasts more than a few days or worsens
Drug Interactions

- Use cautiously with other medicines that affect the stomach

Contraindications / Caution
