Composition
- Naphazoline hydrochloride 0.025%
- Alpha-adrenergic vasoconstrictor (reduces eye redness)
- Pheniramine maleate 0.3%
- Antihistamine (reduces allergic itching)
- Preservative: Benzalkonium chloride
Indication / Use
Used for temporary relief of:
- Redness of the eyes
- Itching due to allergies
- Allergic conjunctivitis caused by:
- Pollen
- Dust
- Animal dander
- Grass exposure
Important: It is for short-term symptom relief only, not treatment of the underlying cause.
Direction of Use
- Instill 1–2 drops into affected eye(s)
- Up to 4 times daily
- Suitable for adults and children ≥ 6 years
- Remove contact lenses before use
- Avoid touching dropper tip
- Do not use continuously for long periods (usually only a few days)
Side Effects
Common:
- Mild burning or stinging
- Temporary blurred vision
- Dilated pupils (light sensitivity)
- Temporary irritation
Serious (less common):
- Eye pain
- Worsening redness or swelling
- Vision changes
- Allergic reaction (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty)
Warnings
- Do NOT use if allergic to ingredients
- Avoid in:
- Narrow-angle glaucoma
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Urinary retention problems
- Overuse may cause rebound redness (eyes become more red after stopping)
- Do not use continuously beyond a few days without medical advice
Interactions
May interact or require caution with:
- MAO inhibitors (antidepressants)
- Other sympathomimetic drugs
- Blood pressure medications
- CNS stimulants or sedatives (systemic absorption possible in sensitive patients)
Caution
- Do not use for long-term “cosmetic whitening” of eyes
- Risk of rebound hyperaemia if overused
- May cause temporary pupil dilation → avoid driving if vision is affected
- Use carefully in:
- Elderly patients
- People with heart disease or hypertension
- Stop and seek medical advice if symptoms worsen after 2–3 days
