Composition
Most formulations contain:
- Neomycin sulphate → antibiotic (kills bacteria)
- Hydrocortisone acetate → corticosteroid (reduces inflammation, swelling, redness)
- Benzalkonium chloride → preservative
Uses / Indications
Used for bacterial + inflammatory conditions of:
- 👁️ Eyes (e.g., conjunctivitis with inflammation)
- 👂 Ears (e.g., otitis externa / infected ear canal)
- 👃 Nose (e.g., allergic or infected rhinitis)
It helps:
- Reduce redness, swelling, itching
- Treat bacterial infections
- Calm inflammation at the same time
Direction for Use
- Usually 1–3 drops in affected eye/ear/nose
- Frequency: often 2–4 times daily (depending on severity)
- Use for short course only (typically ≤7–10 days unless prescribed)
- Do not touch dropper tip to avoid contamination
Side Effects
Common:
- Temporary burning or stinging
- Mild irritation or redness
Less common:
- Allergic reaction (itching, rash, worsening redness)
Serious (rare but important):
- Worsening infection if misused
- Steroid-related complications with prolonged use (e.g., increased eye pressure)
- Possible hearing irritation if used improperly in ear
Warnings (Important)
- Do NOT use for:
- Viral infections (e.g., viral conjunctivitis)
- Fungal infections
- Avoid or use only under strict medical supervision in:
- Eye ulcers
- Glaucoma
- Perforated eardrum
- Do not use long-term (steroid + antibiotic combination can mask infection and cause complications)
Interactions / Cautions
- Avoid mixing with other eye/ear steroid or antibiotic drops
- Use carefully in:
- Children (dose control needed)
- Pregnancy (only if prescribed)
- Do not self-use repeatedly without diagnosis (can worsen resistant infection)
