Composition
- Olive Oil (Olea europaea) 100%
- Usually medical-grade or extra virgin olive oil
- No active medicinal drug (non-prescription cerumen softener)
Indication / Use
Used for:
- Softening and loosening earwax (cerumen)
- Relief of:
- Blocked ears due to wax
- Mild ear discomfort or fullness
- Itching caused by dry ear canal
- Helps prepare earwax for natural removal or ear syringing/microsuction
It is a cerumenolytic (wax-softening ear drop), not an antibiotic or painkiller.
Direction of Use
- Tilt head so affected ear faces upward
- Instill 2–4 drops into the ear canal
- Keep head tilted for 5–10 minutes
- Usually used 2–3 times daily for 3–5 days
- For prevention: may be used weekly in small amounts
Side Effects
Common (usually mild):
- Temporary blocked or muffled hearing
- Mild ear fullness
- Slight discomfort after instillation
- Occasional itching
Rare:
- Irritation of ear canal
- Allergic reaction (very uncommon)
- Worsening blockage if wax swells after oil use
Warnings
- Do NOT use if:
- Ear drum is perforated
- Suspected ear infection (pain, pus, fever)
- Recent ear surgery
- Stop use if:
- Severe pain develops
- Hearing worsens significantly
- Do not insert cotton buds or objects into the ear
Interactions
- No drug interactions (it is oil, not a systemic medicine)
- If using other ear preparations:
- Use separately and follow clinician advice
Caution
- It may temporarily make hearing worse by softening and swelling wax before it comes out
- Not effective for:
- Ear infections
- Sudden hearing loss
- Severe impacted wax (may need microsuction)
- Overuse may trap wax and make the ear feel more blocked
- If symptoms persist after a few days, professional ear cleaning may be required
