Composition

  • Active ingredient: Sodium cromoglicate 2% w/v (20 mg/mL)
  • Preservative: Benzalkonium chloride
  • Form: Ophthalmic (anti-allergy eye drops)

 

Indication / Use

Used for:

  • Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (hayfever eye symptoms)
  • Relief of:
    • Itchy eyes
    • Red eyes
    • Watery eyes
    • Eye irritation caused by pollen exposure

It is a mast cell stabiliser, meaning it helps prevent allergic reactions rather than giving instant relief.


 

Direction of Use

  • Instill 1–2 drops into each eye
  • Usually 4 times daily
  • Use regularly during allergy season for best effect
  • Do not exceed recommended dose

 

Side Effects

Common:

  • Temporary stinging or burning
  • Mild eye irritation
  • Blurred vision shortly after use
  • Watery eyes or mild discomfort

Less common:

  • Foreign body sensation (gritty feeling)
  • Mild redness
  • Bitter taste in mouth (from drainage)

Rare/serious:

  • Allergic reaction (swelling, severe redness)
  • Severe eye irritation or pain
  • Bronchospasm in sensitive individuals

 

Warnings

  • Do NOT use:
    • In children under 6 years
    • If allergic to sodium cromoglicate
  • Stop and seek advice if:
    • No improvement after a few days
    • Symptoms worsen
  • Avoid continuous use beyond ~14 days without medical advice
  • May cause temporary blurred vision → avoid driving immediately after use

 

Interactions

  • No significant drug interactions reported
  • If used with other eye drops:
    • Wait 5–10 minutes between drops
  • Use lubricants or other drops after medicated ones

 

Caution

  • For hayfever-related allergies only (not infection or dry eye)
  • Remove contact lenses before use (benzalkonium chloride may damage lenses)
  • Discard bottle 28 days after opening
  • Do not use continuously long-term without review
  • If symptoms persist, underlying allergy management may be needed (oral antihistamines or steroid sprays may be considered by a clinician)
