Composition
Common formulation includes:
- Witch hazel extract (Hamamelis virginiana ~13%) – soothing, mild astringent
- Polyhexanide (0.0001%) – mild preservative/antimicrobial
- Glycerol – lubricating agent
- Boric acid & sodium borate – buffering agents
- Disodium edetate
- Some versions may contain benzalkonium chloride (preservative depending on market)
Indication / Use
Used for:
- Relief of irritated, tired, and itchy eyes
- Discomfort caused by:
- Dust
- Smoke
- Pollution
- Pollen / mild allergies
- “Cooling and soothing” effect rather than strong medical treatment
It is mainly a comfort/soothing eye drop, not a prescription drug.
Direction of Use
- Instill 2–4 drops in each eye
- Can be used as often as needed
- Wash hands before use
- Avoid touching dropper tip
- Remove contact lenses before use (depending on variant; some allow use with lenses)
Side Effects
Common:
- Mild stinging or burning
- Temporary blurred vision
- Mild irritation after instillation
Less common:
- Redness
- Watery eyes
- Foreign body sensation
Rare:
- Allergic reaction (swelling, severe irritation)
- Worsening redness if sensitive to preservatives
Warnings
- Do NOT use if allergic to:
- Witch hazel
- Preservatives (e.g., benzalkonium chloride)
- Stop use if:
- Irritation worsens
- Pain develops
- Avoid contamination of dropper tip
- Some versions may not be suitable for contact lens wearers
- Not intended for treating infections or glaucoma
Interactions
- No significant drug interactions
- If using multiple eye drops:
- Wait 5–10 minutes between products
- Use medicated drops first, soothing drops last
Caution
- Some formulations contain alcohol or preservatives, which may sting sensitive eyes
- Not a substitute for:
- Dry eye medical treatment (like hyaluronic acid drops)
- Allergy antihistamine eye drops
- Avoid long-term overuse if symptoms persist → may indicate underlying condition
- If redness or irritation continues > a few days, eye examination is recommended
