Composition
- Active ingredient: Oxybutynin chloride 5 mg
- Drug class: Antimuscarinic (anticholinergic) agent
Indication / Uses
Used for:
- Overactive bladder (OAB)
- Urinary urgency (sudden urge to urinate)
- Urinary frequency
- Urge incontinence (loss of bladder control)
- Bladder spasms
Direction of Use
- Usually taken 2–3 times daily (or as prescribed)
- Take with or without food
- Swallow with water
- Take at the same times each day
- Do not crush extended-release forms (if applicable)
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Blurred vision
- Dry eyes
- Reduced sweating
Serious side effects (seek medical help):
- Difficulty urinating or urinary retention
- Confusion or hallucinations (especially in elderly)
- Fast or irregular heartbeat
- Severe allergic reaction
Warnings
- May cause overheating due to reduced sweating
- Can worsen glaucoma (especially narrow-angle glaucoma)
- Use cautiously in elderly patients (risk of confusion)
- May worsen urinary retention in men with enlarged prostate
Interactions
May interact with:
- Other anticholinergic medicines
- Antihistamines (allergy medications)
- Tricyclic antidepressants
- Antipsychotics
- Muscle relaxants
- Alcohol (increases sedation and dizziness)
Caution
- Avoid driving if drowsiness or blurred vision occurs
- Use cautiously in liver or kidney disease
- Maintain hydration but avoid overheating
- Report worsening urinary symptoms or confusion promptly
