Composition
The active ingredient is:
- Magnesium hydroxide (Milk of Magnesia)
→ usually around 415 mg per 5 ml (varies slightly by formulation) ([turn0search5])
It is a saline osmotic laxative and antacid.
Uses / Indications
Used for two main purposes:
1. Constipation
- Draws water into the intestines
- Softens stool and increases bowel movement
- Works in about 30 minutes to 6 hours ([turn0search0])
2. Indigestion / Acid relief
- Neutralises excess stomach acid
- Relieves:
- heartburn
- sour stomach
- acid indigestion ([turn0search1])
Direction of Use
(Varies slightly by brand, but typical)
For constipation (adults):
- 30–45 ml at bedtime
- May repeat nightly until bowel movement normalises
- Always drink a full glass of water
For indigestion:
- Smaller doses (5–10 ml as needed)
Children:
- Only under age guidance (usually 3+ years) and lower doses
- Not for very young children unless advised

Side Effects
Common:
- Diarrhoea (most common)
- Abdominal cramps
- Bloating or gas
- Nausea
Less common but important:
- Dehydration (if overused)
- Electrolyte imbalance (low potassium)
- Weakness or dizziness

Warnings / Precautions
- Do NOT overuse → can cause diarrhoea and dehydration
- Avoid if:
- severe kidney disease
- bowel obstruction
- severe abdominal pain of unknown cause
- Use caution in:
- elderly
- pregnant or breastfeeding (only if advised)
- Long-term daily use is not recommended
Drug Interactions
- May reduce absorption of:
- antibiotics (tetracyclines, quinolones)
- iron supplements
- thyroid medicines
- Diuretics (“water tablets”) → electrolyte imbalance risk
- Other laxatives → excessive bowel effect
Contraindications / Caution
Avoid if:
- Allergy to magnesium hydroxide
- Severe kidney disease
- Intestinal obstruction
