Composition
Pilex ointment is a herbal (Ayurvedic) polyherbal preparation, commonly containing:
- Mimosa pudica (Lajjalu)
- Eclipta alba
- Vitex negundo
- Calendula officinalis
- Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora)
- Borax
- Zinc compounds (Yashad bhasma)
It is a non-steroidal, plant-based formulation.
Uses / Indications
Used mainly for anorectal conditions, especially:
- Hemorrhoids (piles) – internal and external
- Anal fissures
- Anal itching (pruritus ani)
- Burning, pain, swelling around the anus
- Pregnancy-related hemorrhoids
Direction for Use
- For external and sometimes internal anorectal use (with applicator)
- Apply before and after bowel movement
- Clean area gently before application
- Use a thin layer as directed by clinician or product instructions
- Duration: usually 1–2 weeks or until symptoms improve
Side Effects
Generally well tolerated, but possible effects include:
- Mild burning or irritation
- Itching at application site
- Rare allergic skin reaction (rash, swelling)
Serious side effects are uncommon due to its herbal nature.
Warnings
- Avoid if allergic to any herbal ingredients
- Do not apply to:
- Severe infected wounds
- Deep rectal injuries without medical advice
- Stop use if irritation worsens
- Seek medical help if bleeding increases or persists
Interactions
- No major drug–drug interactions known (topical herbal product)
- Use cautiously with other rectal medications to avoid irritation or masking symptoms
Cautions
- Use cautiously in pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Not recommended for severe/prolapsed hemorrhoids without medical supervision
- Maintain hygiene of applicator to prevent reinfection
- If symptoms persist beyond ~2 weeks, medical evaluation is needed
