Composition
- Carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC) – usually higher concentration than standard drops (gel form)
- Drug class: Ophthalmic lubricant (artificial tear gel)
Uses / Indications
Used for moderate to severe dry eye conditions, including:
- Chronic dry eye syndrome
- Eye irritation from dust, wind, smoke, or screen use
- Burning, gritty, or tired eyes
- Night-time dry eye relief (longer-lasting than drops)
- Post-ocular surgery dryness (as prescribed)
Direction for Use
- Instill 1 drop in affected eye(s) as needed
- Commonly used 2–4 times daily, or less frequently due to longer action
- May cause temporary blurred vision after use (gel consistency)
- Remove contact lenses before use; wait 10–15 minutes before reinserting
- Avoid touching the tip of the tube to the eye
Side Effects
Common:
- Temporary blurred vision
- Mild stinging or irritation
- Sticky sensation in eyes
Rare:
- Eye redness
- Allergic reaction (itching, swelling, worsening irritation)
Warnings
- For external eye use only
- Do not use if product changes colour or becomes contaminated
- Stop and seek medical advice if:
- Eye pain increases
- Vision becomes persistently blurred
- Signs of infection (pus, severe redness) occur
Interactions
- Minimal systemic interactions
- When used with other eye drops:
- Separate by at least 5–10 minutes
- Use gel last if multiple eye medications are prescribed
ACautions
Use carefully in:
- Severe or infected eye conditions (needs proper medical treatment, not just lubrication)
- Long-term chronic dry eye (may need additional therapy)
- Contact lens users (timing of use is important)
