Composition
- Active ingredient: Epinastine hydrochloride 0.05% (0.5 mg/mL)
- Class: Second-generation antihistamine (anti-allergic eye drop)
- Preservative: Often benzalkonium chloride (varies by brand)
Indication / Use
Used for:
- Allergic conjunctivitis (eye allergy)
- Relief of:
- Itchy eyes
- Red eyes
- Watery eyes
- Swollen eyelids due to allergies
It treats allergy symptoms, not glaucoma or dry eye.
Direction of Use
- Instill 1 drop into affected eye(s)
- Usually twice daily (morning and evening)
- Use during allergy season or as prescribed
- Do not stop early unless advised by doctor
- Remove contact lenses before use and wait 15 minutes before reinserting
Side Effects
Common:
- Burning or stinging sensation
- Mild eye irritation
- Redness of eyes (conjunctival hyperaemia)
- Itching
- Temporary blurred vision
Less common:
- Headache
- Runny or blocked nose
- Dry eyes
- Increased tearing
- Unusual taste in mouth
Rare/serious:
- Eye swelling
- Severe allergic reaction (face swelling, breathing difficulty)
- Eye pain or significant vision changes
Warnings
- Do not use if allergic to epinastine
- Stop and seek care if:
- Swelling of face/eyes occurs
- Breathing difficulty develops
- Use cautiously if you have:
- Severe eye surface disease (dry eye, corneal damage)
- May cause temporary blurred vision → avoid driving immediately after use
Interactions
- Few significant drug interactions
- Use caution with:
- Other eye drops (space at least 5 minutes apart)
- Allergy medications that may increase drowsiness (rare with eye form but still possible systemically)
Caution
- Do not touch dropper tip to eye or surfaces
- Remove contact lenses before use
- Use only for allergy-related eye symptoms
- May cause short-term stinging after instillation
- If no improvement after ~1–2 weeks, reassessment may be needed
- Store properly and avoid contamination
