Composition
Each tablet contains:
- Senna (sennosides / hydroxyanthracene glycosides)
→ usually about 7.5 mg sennosides per tablet
It is a natural plant-based stimulant laxative.
Uses / Indications
Used for:
- Short-term constipation (main use)
- Occasional difficulty passing stool
- Bowel emptying before medical procedures
It works by stimulating the muscles of the large intestine to push stool out.
Direction of Use
- Adults (18+):
- Works in:
- about 8–12 hours (usually next morning)
- Short-term use only (usually a few days)
Take at bedtime because it works overnight.
Side Effects
Common:
- Abdominal cramps
- Diarrhoea or loose stools
- Nausea
- Stomach discomfort or gas
Less common but important:
- Dehydration
- Low potassium (electrolyte imbalance)
- Dependence if overused
Warnings / Precautions
- Do NOT use for more than about 1 week
- Avoid long-term use → can cause lazy bowel (dependence)
- Stop if:
- severe abdominal pain
- no bowel movement after use
- rectal bleeding
- Drink plenty of water
- Use cautiously in elderly or kidney disease patients
Drug Interactions
- Diuretics (water tablets) → potassium loss risk
- Steroids → increased electrolyte imbalance
- Digoxin (heart medicine) → toxicity risk if potassium drops
- Other laxatives → excessive bowel effect
Contraindications / Caution
Avoid if:
- Intestinal obstruction
- Severe abdominal pain of unknown cause
- Dehydration
- Allergy to senna
