Uses / Indications
Used for:
- Erectile dysfunction (ED)
- Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) under specific brands/doses
- Improving blood flow in certain circulation disorders
Direction for Use
For erectile dysfunction:
- Usually taken 30 minutes to 1 hour before sexual activity
- Effects may last about 4–6 hours
- Do not take more than once daily
- Can be taken with or without food
- Heavy/fatty meals may delay effect
For pulmonary hypertension:
- Taken regularly as prescribed by a doctor
Side Effects
Common side effects:
- Headache
- Flushing
- Dizziness
- Nasal congestion
- Indigestion
- Blurred vision or blue-tinged vision
Serious side effects:
- Chest pain
- Fainting
- Sudden hearing loss
- Sudden vision loss
- Painful or prolonged erection (priapism)
- Severe drop in blood pressure
Warnings
- Do NOT use with nitrate medications; can cause dangerous low blood pressure
- Use cautiously in heart disease
- Sexual activity may strain the heart in some patients
- Avoid recreational use with other stimulants or “poppers”
Interactions
May interact with:
- Nitrates (nitroglycerin, isosorbide)
- Alpha-blockers
- Certain antifungal medicines
- HIV medications
- Some antibiotics (e.g., erythromycin, clarithromycin)
- Other erectile dysfunction medicines
- Alcohol (may worsen dizziness and low blood pressure)
Cautions / Precautions
Use cautiously in:
- Heart disease
- Liver or kidney disease
- Low blood pressure
- History of stroke or heart attack
- Eye disorders such as retinitis pigmentosa
Seek urgent medical attention if:
- Erection lasts more than 4 hours
- Sudden loss of vision or hearing occurs
- Severe chest pain develops
