Composition
- Active ingredient: Sumatriptan 100 mg
- Drug class: Triptan (Selective serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonist)
Uses / Indications
Used for:
- Acute treatment of Migraine
- Treatment of cluster headache (in some cases, usually injectable forms)
It is used to stop a migraine attack, not to prevent migraines.
Direction for Use
- Take as soon as migraine starts
- Usual adult dose: 50 mg once, may repeat after at least 2 hours if needed (as prescribed)
- Do not exceed the maximum daily dose (as directed by doctor)
- Swallow with water
- Works best early in the attack
Side Effects
Common side effects:
- Tingling or warmth sensation
- Dizziness or drowsiness
- Flushing
- Feeling of pressure in chest or throat
- Nausea
- Fatigue
Serious side effects (rare):
- Chest pain or tightness
- Irregular heartbeat
- Severe allergic reaction
- Stroke-like symptoms (very rare)
- Severe blood pressure increase
Warnings
- Not for prevention of migraines
- Do NOT use if you have:
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Heart disease or history of heart attack
- Certain circulation problems
- May cause chest tightness (usually not heart-related, but must be checked)
- Use cautiously in liver disease
Interactions
May interact with:
- Other triptans (do not combine)
- Ergotamine-containing medicines
- Antidepressants (SSRIs/SNRIs → risk of serotonin syndrome)
- MAO inhibitors
- Certain migraine prevention drugs
- Alcohol (may worsen dizziness)
Cautions / Precautions
- Avoid driving if dizzy or drowsy
- Use only when migraine is clearly diagnosed
- Do not overuse (can cause medication-overuse headache)
- Seek urgent care if:
- Chest pain occurs
- Severe weakness or speech problems occur
- Allergic reaction develops
- Use carefully in:
- Heart disease risk patients
- Hypertension
- Elderly patients
