Composition
Depending on the product type, common active ingredients include:
- Polyethylene glycol
- Propylene glycol
- Hydroxypropyl guar
Some formulations may also contain lubricants and preservatives.
Indication / Use
Used for:
- Relief of:
- Dry eyes
- Eye irritation
- Burning sensation
- Grittiness or discomfort
- Lubrication of the eyes caused by:
- Environmental factors
- Prolonged screen use
- Wind or dust exposure
- Contact lens dryness
Direction of Use
- Instill 1–2 drops into affected eye(s) as needed or as directed
- Wash hands before use
- Shake bottle if instructed on the label
- Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface
- If using multiple eye medications, allow at least 5 minutes between products
Side Effects
Common side effects:
- Temporary blurred vision
- Mild eye irritation
- Burning or stinging sensation
- Watery eyes
Serious side effects (rare):
- Eye pain
- Persistent redness
- Vision changes
- Severe allergic reaction
Warnings
- Do not use if solution changes colour or becomes cloudy
- Avoid sharing the bottle with others
- Stop use and seek medical attention if:
- Severe irritation occurs
- Symptoms worsen
- Vision changes develop
Interactions
- Generally has minimal drug interactions
- If used with other ophthalmic medications, spacing between applications is recommended
Caution
- Remove contact lenses before application unless product is specifically labeled for contact lens use
- Wait before driving if temporary blurred vision occurs
- Store at recommended temperature
- Keep out of reach of children
- Use within recommended period after opening the bottle
