Composition
- Active ingredient: Albendazole 200 mg
- Drug class: Anthelmintic (anti-worm / deworming medicine)
Uses / Indications
Used to treat intestinal and tissue worm infections such as:
- Pinworm (threadworm)
- Roundworm
- Hookworm
- Whipworm
- Some tapeworm infections
- Mixed intestinal parasitic infections
Also used for:
- Routine deworming (especially in endemic areas)
- Prevention of worm reinfection in communities
Direction for Use
- Take with food, preferably fatty food (improves absorption)
- Can be chewed or swallowed with water
- Dose depends on infection:
- Often single dose or short course (1–3 days)
- In some cases (e.g., pinworm), a repeat dose after 2 weeks is needed
- Follow exact prescription instructions
Side Effects
Common side effects:
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Temporary hair thinning (rare, usually with long use)
Serious (rare) side effects:
- Liver inflammation (yellow eyes/skin, dark urine)
- Low white blood cell count
- Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, itching)
- Fever or sore throat (sign of blood cell suppression)
Warnings
- Avoid in pregnancy, especially first trimester
- Use cautiously in liver disease
- Long-term or high-dose use requires liver and blood monitoring
- Not effective for bacterial or viral infections
Interactions
May interact with:
- Dexamethasone (may increase albendazole levels)
- Cimetidine (increases drug levels)
- Praziquantel (may increase effects of both drugs)
- Some anti-seizure medicines (may reduce effectiveness)
- Alcohol (may increase liver strain)
Cautions / Precautions
- Maintain good hygiene to prevent reinfection (handwashing, clean nails, washing bedding)
- Treat household contacts in pinworm infections if advised
- Avoid unnecessary repeated dosing without medical guidance
- Seek medical help if:
- Persistent vomiting
- Severe abdominal pain
- Yellowing of skin/eyes
- Unusual fatigue or fever
