Composition

  • Active ingredient: Albendazole
  • Usually strength: 100 mg per 5 mL 
  • Drug class: Anthelmintic (anti-worm / deworming medicine)

 

Uses / Indications

Used for treatment of parasitic worm infections such as:

  • Pinworm (threadworm)
  • Roundworm
  • Hookworm
  • Whipworm
  • Some tapeworm infections
  • Mixed intestinal worm infestations

Also used for:

  • Routine deworming in children and adults
  • Community parasite control programs

 

Direction for Use

  • Take by mouth (oral suspension)
  • Shake bottle well before use
  • Usually taken with food, preferably fatty food
  • Dose depends on age and infection type (doctor-prescribed)
  • Common regimens:
    • Single dose or short course (1–3 days)
    • Repeat dose after 2 weeks for pinworm infections (if advised)

Important:

  • Use measuring spoon or syringe for accurate dosing
  • Follow exact prescription instructions

 

Side Effects

Common side effects:

  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Temporary loss of appetite

Less common/rare:

  • Mild fever
  • Temporary hair thinning (long use)
  • Diarrhea

 

Serious (rare) side effects:

  • Liver inflammation (yellow eyes/skin, dark urine)
  • Low white blood cell count
  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)

 

Warnings

  • Avoid use during pregnancy, especially first 3 months
  • Use cautiously in liver disease
  • Long-term use requires monitoring of liver function and blood counts
  • Not effective for viral or bacterial infections

 

Interactions

May interact with:

  • Cimetidine (increases albendazole levels)
  • Dexamethasone (increases drug concentration)
  • Praziquantel (enhanced effects)
  • Some anti-seizure medications (may reduce effectiveness)
  • Alcohol (increases liver strain)

 

Cautions / Precautions

  • Maintain strict hygiene to prevent reinfection (handwashing, clean nails, washing bedding)
  • Treat household members if advised (especially for pinworm)
  • Use correct dosing device (not kitchen spoons)
  • Seek medical attention if:
    • Severe abdominal pain
    • Persistent vomiting
    • Yellowing of eyes/skin
    • Severe rash or fever
