Composition
- Albendazole (commonly 200 mg/5 mL or similar strength)
- Drug class: Anthelmintic / antiparasitic medicine
Albendazole kills worms by blocking their ability to absorb glucose, leading to parasite death.
Uses / Indications
Used for treatment of intestinal worm infections such as:
- Roundworm
- Hookworm
- Pinworm (threadworm)
- Whipworm
- Tapeworm
- Mixed worm infestations
It is commonly used in children for deworming.
Direction for Use
- Shake bottle well before use
- Usually taken as a single dose for common deworming
- Dose depends on:
- Age
- Weight
- Type of worm infection
- Often taken with food
- Some infections may require repeat dosing after 2 weeks
Example:
- Many paediatric albendazole syrups contain 200 mg per 5 mL.
Side Effects
Common:
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Headache
- Dizziness
Less common:
- Fever
- Temporary hair thinning
- Fatigue
Rare but serious:
- Liver problems
- Allergic reactions
- Blood cell suppression (rare with prolonged/high-dose use)
Warnings
- Avoid use during pregnancy, especially first trimester
- Use cautiously in:
- Liver disease
- Severe illness
- Do not exceed recommended dose
- Long-term use may require liver and blood monitoring
Interactions
May interact with:
- Anti-seizure medicines (e.g., carbamazepine, phenytoin)
- Some steroids
- Other antiparasitic medicines
Cautions
Use carefully in:
- Children under 1–2 years unless prescribed
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Patients with liver disease
To prevent reinfection:
- Wash hands regularly
- Keep nails short
- Wash bedding/clothes
- Practice food hygiene
