Use / Indications
Used for treatment and prevention of:
- Allergic conjunctivitis
- Seasonal eye allergies (hay fever)
- Perennial allergic conjunctivitis
- Vernal keratoconjunctivitis
- Allergic eye irritation from dust, pollen, animal fur, or contact lenses
- Red, itchy, watery eyes caused by allergy
Mechanism of Action
Sodium cromoglycate stabilizes mast cells and prevents release of histamine and other allergy mediators, thereby reducing allergic inflammation in the eyes.
Direction of Use
Typical dosage:
- 1–2 drops into affected eye(s)
- Usually 4–6 times daily or as prescribed
Instructions:
- Wash hands before use
- Do not touch dropper tip
- Remove contact lenses before instillation
- Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting contact lenses
- Use regularly for best effect because relief may take several days
Common Side Effects
- Temporary burning or stinging
- Eye irritation
- Watery eyes
- Redness
- Itching
- Blurred vision
- Mild discomfort after application
Serious Side Effects
Seek medical attention if patient develops:
- Severe eye swelling
- Persistent pain
- Vision changes
- Severe allergic reaction
- Difficulty breathing
Warnings
Do NOT use in:
- Patients allergic to sodium cromoglycate or any component of the drops
- Severely contaminated or damaged eye conditions without medical review
Drug Interactions
- Clinically significant interactions are uncommon
- When using multiple eye medications, allow at least 5–10 minutes between drops
Cautions
- For ophthalmic use only
- May temporarily blur vision after use
- Contains benzalkonium chloride which may irritate eyes and discolor soft contact lenses
- Use cautiously in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless prescribed
- Not usually recommended for children below 4 years unless directed by a doctor
