Composition

Contains:

  • Latanoprost 0.005%
  • Timolol maleate 0.5% (drugs.com)

Category / Class

  • Combination anti-glaucoma eye drop

Use / Indications

Used for:

  • Open-angle glaucoma
  • Ocular hypertension
  • Patients insufficiently controlled with single glaucoma medication (drugs.com)

 

Mechanism of Action

  • Latanoprost increases aqueous humour outflow from the eye.
  • Timolol decreases aqueous humour production.

Together they reduce intraocular pressure more effectively than either medicine alone.

 

Direction of Use

Typical dosage:

  • 1 drop into affected eye(s) once daily

Instructions:

  • Preferably use in the evening
  • Wash hands before use
  • Avoid touching dropper tip
  • Remove contact lenses before instillation
  • Reinsert contact lenses after at least 15 minutes
  • If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between medications  

 

Common Side Effects

Eye-related:

  • Eye redness
  • Burning/stinging
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye irritation
  • Dry eyes
  • Increased eyelash growth
  • Darkening of iris or eyelids

 

Systemic (timolol-related):

  • Slow heart rate
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath

 

Serious Side Effects

Seek urgent medical attention if patient develops:

  • Wheezing or breathing difficulty
  • Chest pain
  • Severe dizziness/fainting
  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Significant vision changes
  • Severe eye pain/swelling
  • Heart rhythm disturbances  

 

Warnings

Do NOT use in:

  • Asthma or severe COPD
  • Sinus bradycardia
  • Heart block
  • Heart failure
  • Allergy to latanoprost or timolol
  • Severe respiratory disease

 

Important warnings:

  • Timolol may be systemically absorbed and act like oral beta-blockers
  • Iris colour change may be permanent
  • May mask signs of hypoglycaemia in diabetics
  • Use cautiously in thyroid disease

 

Drug Interactions

Use cautiously with:

  • Oral beta-blockers
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Digoxin
  • Antiarrhythmics
  • Other glaucoma drops
  • Insulin/antidiabetic medicines
  • CYP2D6 inhibitors (e.g., fluoxetine, quinidine)

 

Cautions

  • Perform punctal occlusion (close eyes gently after instillation) to reduce systemic absorption
  • Temporary blurred vision may impair driving
  • Monitor pulse and breathing in susceptible patients
  • Use cautiously in:
    • Diabetes
    • Heart disease
    • Respiratory disease
    • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Store according to manufacturer instructions
