Composition

  • Cyproheptadine hydrochloride
  • Drug class: First-generation antihistamine + appetite stimulant

 

Uses / Indications

Used for:

  • Appetite stimulation (poor appetite, weight loss support)
  • Allergic conditions:
    • Runny nose
    • Sneezing
    • Itching (allergic skin reactions)
  • Sometimes used for:
    • Migraine prevention (off-label use)

 

Direction for Use

  • Usually taken 1–3 times daily
  • Often taken at night because it causes drowsiness
  • Can be taken with or without food
  • Dose depends on age and indication

 

Side Effects

Common:

  • Drowsiness (very common)
  • Increased appetite and weight gain
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue

Less common:

  • Blurred vision
  • Constipation
  • Restlessness (rare in some people)

 

Warnings

  • May cause strong sedation → avoid driving or alcohol
  • Can increase appetite significantly → risk of weight gain
  • Use cautiously in:
    • Glaucoma
    • Asthma
    • Enlarged prostate (urinary retention risk)

 

Interactions

May interact with:

  • Alcohol → increased sedation
  • Sleeping pills or sedatives → excessive drowsiness
  • Other antihistamines → additive side effects
  • Antidepressants (especially MAO inhibitors)

 

Cautions

Use carefully in:

  • Children (dose must be controlled)
  • Elderly patients (confusion, sedation risk)
  • Patients with glaucoma or urinary issues
