Composition
Feroglobin Syrup is a hematinic (blood-forming supplement) commonly containing:
- Iron (usually ferrous form such as ferrous fumarate or equivalent)
- Folic acid (Vitamin B9)
- Vitamin B12
- Often added nutrients: Zinc, Vitamin B6, Copper, and B-complex vitamins
Uses / Indications
Used to prevent and treat:
- Iron deficiency anaemia
- Low haemoglobin (low blood levels)
- Fatigue and weakness due to anaemia
- Pregnancy-related anaemia prevention
- Recovery after illness, surgery, or blood loss
Direction for Use
- Usually taken once or twice daily
- Best taken after food to reduce stomach upset
- Can be taken with water or juice
- Shake well before use (if syrup form)
- Do not exceed recommended dose
- Treatment may continue for weeks to months depending on haemoglobin level
Side Effects
Common:
- Dark stools (normal with iron)
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Nausea
- Stomach discomfort
- Metallic taste
Less common:
- Vomiting
- Teeth staining (if not properly diluted or rinsed)
Warnings
- Keep away from children (iron overdose can be dangerous)
- Do not exceed dose—iron toxicity is serious
- Not for use in people with iron overload conditions (e.g., hemochromatosis)
- May mask other causes of anaemia if used without proper diagnosis
Interactions
May interact with:
- Antacids
- Calcium supplements
- Tetracycline or fluoroquinolone antibiotics
- Thyroid medicines (e.g., levothyroxine)
These can reduce iron absorption if taken together.
Cautions
Use carefully in:
- Patients with stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal disease
- Chronic kidney disease (under medical supervision)
- People already taking multiple iron supplements
