Composition
- Ferrous sulphate 200 mg
- Provides elemental iron (used to build haemoglobin)

- Iron supplement (hematinic)
Uses / Indications
Used for:
- Iron deficiency anaemia
- Low haemoglobin (low blood count)
- Pregnancy and postpartum iron supplementation
- Heavy menstrual bleeding (to replace lost iron)
- General iron deficiency from poor diet or blood loss
Direction for Use
- Usually taken 1–2 times daily or as prescribed
- Best taken on an empty stomach (if tolerated) for better absorption
- Can be taken with vitamin C (orange juice) to improve absorption
- If stomach upset occurs, take after food
- Avoid taking with tea, coffee, or milk
Side Effects
Common:
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Dark/black stools (normal)
- Stomach discomfort
- Metallic taste
Less common:
Warnings
- Do NOT take in excess → iron overdose can be dangerous
- Keep out of reach of children (overdose can be fatal in children)
- Use only if iron deficiency is confirmed or prescribed
- Long-term use should be monitored
Interactions
Iron absorption is reduced by:
- Osteocare Original (calcium)
- Antacids
- Tea/coffee
- Dairy products
- Some antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin, tetracyclines)
Take iron 2–4 hours apart from these medicines.
Cautions
Use carefully in:
- Stomach ulcers or gastritis
- Hemochromatosis (iron overload disorder)
- Chronic liver disease
- Patients taking multiple supplements
