Composition

  • Active ingredient: Diphenhydramine hydrochloride 2% w/w
  • Class: Topical antihistamine (H1 blocker)
  • Other ingredients (may vary by brand):
    • Cream base (emollients/ointments)
    • Preservatives such as parabens or benzoates (varies by manufacturer)


 

Indication / Use

Used for short-term relief of minor allergic skin reactions, such as:

  • Insect bites and stings
  • Itchy rashes (pruritus)
  • Urticaria (nettle rash/hives)
  • Mild sunburn irritation
  • Localized allergic skin reactions

It is meant for small, limited areas of skin only.


 

Direction of Use

  • Apply a thin layer to affected area
  • Usually up to 2 times daily
  • Use for short periods only (max ~3 days)
  • Wash hands after application
  • Avoid large or repeated applications


 

Side Effects

Common:

  • Mild stinging or burning
  • Skin redness or irritation
  • Dryness or peeling

Possible allergic effects:

  • Worsening rash (contact sensitisation)
  • Photosensitivity (skin becomes more sensitive to sunlight)
  • Rare eczema-like reaction

Systemic effects (rare, if overused or on large areas):

  • Drowsiness or sedation
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Confusion (especially in children/elderly)


 

Warnings

  • Do NOT use:
    • On broken, raw, or infected skin
    • On large areas of body
    • For more than a few days
    • In children under 6 years
  • Avoid contact with:
    • Eyes
    • Mouth
    • Mucous membranes


 

Interactions

  • No major drug interactions when used correctly
  • Risk increases if combined with:
    • Other diphenhydramine products
    • Strong sedatives (if absorbed systemically in excess)

 

Caution

  • Can cause sensitization (allergy to the cream itself) with repeated use
  • Overuse can make itching worse instead of better
  • Stop if rash spreads or worsens
  • Sun exposure may worsen skin reaction (photosensitivity risk)
  • If symptoms persist, a different treatment (e.g., steroid cream or oral antihistamine) may be needed
