Use / Indications

Used for:

  • Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Blocked nose
  • Itchy nose and throat
  • Itchy, red, watery eyes
  • Skin allergies (hives/urticaria)

 

Mechanism of Action

Fexofenadine blocks histamine (H1) receptors, preventing the allergic reactions that cause itching, sneezing, swelling, and watery eyes.

Direction of Use

Adults and children ≥12 years:

  • 120 mg once daily

Instructions:

  • Preferably take before a meal.
  • Swallow whole with water.
  • Avoid taking with grapefruit, orange, or apple juice, as these may reduce absorption.

 

Common Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Mild drowsiness
  • Fatigue

 

Serious Side Effects

Seek medical attention if:

  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Swelling of the face or throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Severe dizziness or fainting

 

Warnings

Do NOT use if:

  • Allergic to fexofenadine or any ingredient in the tablet.

 

Important warnings:

  • Use cautiously in kidney disease.
  • Consult a healthcare professional before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Although usually non-drowsy, some people may experience sleepiness.

 

Drug Interactions

Use cautiously with:

  • Antacids containing aluminium or magnesium (separate by at least 2 hours)
  • Erythromycin
  • Ketoconazole
  • Certain heart medications
  • Fruit juices (grapefruit, orange, apple)

 

Cautions

  • Assess your response before driving or operating machinery.
  • Take consistently during allergy season for best results.
  • Maintain adequate hydration.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose.
