Use / Indications
Used for:
- Open-angle glaucoma
- Ocular hypertension (high pressure inside the eye)
How It Works
AZARGA reduces the production of fluid (aqueous humour) inside the eye, thereby lowering intraocular pressure.
Direction of Use
- Usually: 1 drop in affected eye(s) twice daily (morning and evening)
- Shake bottle well before use
- Wash hands before application
- Avoid touching dropper tip to the eye
- If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between medications
- Remove soft contact lenses before use and reinsert after 15 minutes
- Press the inner corner of the eye for 1–2 minutes after instillation to reduce systemic absorption
Common Side Effects
Eye-related:
- Blurred vision
- Burning or stinging sensation
- Eye irritation/redness
- Dry eyes
- Eye pain
- Bitter or unusual taste in mouth
Less common:
- Fatigue
- Slow heartbeat
- Cough
- Headache
- Nausea
Warnings
Do not use if patient has:
- Asthma or severe COPD
- Severe heart problems
- Severe kidney disease
- Sulphonamide allergy
- Allergy to beta-blockers
- Hyperchloremic acidosis
Drug Interactions
Use cautiously with:
- Oral beta-blockers
- Calcium channel blockers
- Anti-arrhythmics (e.g. amiodarone)
- Digoxin
- Antidiabetic drugs
- MAO inhibitors
Cautions
- May temporarily blur vision; avoid driving immediately after use
- Use cautiously in diabetes because timolol may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms
- Caution in liver disease, dry eye disease, and corneal disorders
- Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding unless prescribed
- Avoid contamination of the bottle tip
- Discard bottle 4 weeks after opening
