- Betaxolol hydrochloride 0.5% w/v (equivalent to betaxolol 5 mg/mL)

Use / Indications
Used for:
- Open-angle glaucoma
- Ocular hypertension (raised eye pressure)
Mechanism of Action
Betaxolol lowers intraocular pressure by reducing the production of aqueous humour (fluid inside the eye).
Direction of Use
- Usual adult dose:
- 1 drop into affected eye(s) twice daily
- Wash hands before use
- Avoid touching the dropper tip
- Remove contact lenses before application and reinsert after about 15 minutes
- Close eyes gently or press inner corner of the eye for 1–2 minutes after instillation to reduce systemic absorption
Common Side Effects
Eye-related:
- Temporary burning/stinging
- Blurred vision
- Eye discomfort
- Dry eyes
- Redness
- Watery eyes
- Feeling of something in the eye
Systemic:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Slow heartbeat
- Trouble sleeping
- Nausea
Serious Side Effects
Seek medical attention if patient develops:
- Breathing difficulty/wheezing
- Chest pain
- Severe dizziness or fainting
- Irregular heartbeat
- Severe eye pain or swelling
- Vision changes
- Allergic reactions/rash
Warnings
Do not use in patients with:
- Asthma or severe COPD
- Sinus bradycardia (slow heart rate)
- Heart block
- Cardiogenic shock
- Overt heart failure
- Allergy to betaxolol or beta-blockers
Drug Interactions
Use cautiously with:
- Oral beta-blockers
- Calcium channel blockers
- Digoxin
- Anti-arrhythmic drugs
- Insulin or antidiabetic drugs
- Other glaucoma medications
Cautions
- May temporarily blur vision; avoid driving immediately after use
- Can mask symptoms of hypoglycaemia in diabetics
- Use cautiously in thyroid disease and circulation disorders
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly necessary
- Small amounts may pass into breast milk
- Avoid contamination of bottle tip
