Composition
Cerumol is an oil-based ear wax softening solution (cerumenolytic). Typical ingredients include:
- Refined arachis oil (peanut oil) ~57%
- Chlorobutanol (antiseptic agent) ~5%
- Other oils/excipients depending on manufacturer:
- Turpentine oil
- Chlorocresol / preservatives
- Propylene glycol derivatives (in newer formulas)

Use / Indication
- Softening and removal of earwax (cerumen) blockage
- Relief of symptoms caused by impacted wax:
- Blocked ear sensation
- Reduced hearing due to wax
- Ear fullness
- Helps prepare earwax for easier removal or ear syringing
It is NOT for ear infections, pain, or perforated eardrum
Direction of Use
- Lie with affected ear facing upward
- Instil about 5 drops into the ear
- Keep head tilted for a few minutes
- Sometimes cotton wool is placed lightly in the ear to retain drops
- Use twice daily for up to 3 days
- Wax should soften and come out naturally or be removed later if needed

Side Effects
Usually mild:
- Mild ear irritation or stinging
- Temporary fullness or blockage sensation (wax swells initially)
- Redness or rash (rare)
- Allergic reaction (rare, especially in peanut-sensitive individuals)
Warning
- Do NOT use if:
- Ear infection or inflamed ear canal
- Perforated (burst) eardrum
- Allergy to peanut oil or ingredients
- Do not use for more than 3 days without medical advice
- Avoid in very young children unless advised by a clinician
- Stop if pain, discharge, or worsening symptoms occur
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions (local ear use)
- Caution if using:
- Other ear preparations at the same time (may reduce effectiveness)
Caution
- Temporary hearing reduction can happen initially as wax softens and swells
- Do not insert cotton buds or objects into ear during treatment
- If blockage persists after use, professional ear cleaning may be required
- Seek medical review if:
- Pain develops
- Dizziness occurs
- No improvement after full course
