Composition

  • Ciprofloxacin 0.3% w/v (3 mg/mL)
  • Excipients may include:
    • Benzalkonium chloride (preservative)
    • Sodium acetate / acetic acid
    • Mannitol
    • Edetate disodium
    • Purified water

Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic.


 

Use / Indication

Ciloxan eye drops are used for bacterial eye infections, including:

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Corneal ulcers (keratitis)
  • Other external bacterial infections of the eye

It works by killing bacteria and stopping their DNA replication.

It does not treat viral or fungal eye infections.


 

Direction of Use

Typical dosing depends on severity:

  • Mild infection:
    • 1–2 drops every 2 hours initially
    • Then reduce frequency as infection improves
  • Severe corneal ulcer:
    • Very frequent dosing (even every 15–30 minutes at first) under medical supervision

General steps:

  • Wash hands before use
  • Pull lower eyelid down and instill drop
  • Do not touch dropper tip to eye
  • Close eye for 1–2 minutes
  • Remove contact lenses during treatment

 

Side Effects

Common:

  • Eye burning or stinging
  • Redness or irritation
  • Watery eyes
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Temporary blurred vision
  • Bitter/metallic taste in mouth

Less common:

  • Eyelid swelling
  • Crusting
  • Light sensitivity

Rare:

  • Allergic reaction (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty)

 

Warning

  • For external eye use only
  • Do not use if allergic to ciprofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics
  • Stop and seek care if:
    • Eye pain worsens
    • Vision changes occur
    • Severe irritation or swelling develops
  • Do not use for:
    • Viral conjunctivitis
    • Fungal infections
  • Contact lenses should not be worn during infection

 

Interaction

  • Very few significant drug interactions (eye use is mostly local)
  • Possible caution with:
    • Other strong antibiotic eye drops (spacing needed)
    • Other eye medications (to avoid dilution effect)

 

Caution

  • Mild temporary side effects are common and usually not harmful
  • Complete full course even if symptoms improve early
  • Overuse or unnecessary use can contribute to antibiotic resistance
  • Systemic absorption is very low, but caution is still advised in sensitive individuals
  • If no improvement in a few days, reassessment is needed
