Composition
Each tablet contains:
- Artemether 20 mg
- Lumefantrine 120 mg
- Drug class: Artemisinin-based combination antimalarial (ACT)
Uses / Indications
Used for treatment of:
- Uncomplicated Malaria
- Malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum
- Mixed malaria infections sensitive to artemether/lumefantrine
Not intended for prevention of malaria or severe malaria treatment unless directed in hospital settings.
Direction for Use
- Taken orally with food or milk
- Fat-containing food improves absorption and effectiveness
- Usually given over 3 days (6 doses total)
Typical schedule:
- First dose at diagnosis
- Second dose after 8 hours
- Then twice daily for the next 2 days
Dose depends on body weight and age.
If vomiting occurs within about 1–2 hours, another dose may be required.
Side Effects
Common side effects:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Fever
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Joint or muscle pain
Serious side effects:
- Palpitations
- Irregular heartbeat
- Severe allergic reactions
- Fainting
- Severe skin reactions
Warnings
- May prolong QT interval (heart rhythm effect)
- Avoid combining with certain heart medications
- Use cautiously in:
- Heart disease
- Liver disease
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Incomplete treatment may lead to malaria recurrence or resistance
Interactions
May interact with:
- Other antimalarial medicines
- Certain antibiotics (macrolides)
- Antifungal medicines
- HIV medications
- Seizure medicines
- Anti-arrhythmics
- Grapefruit juice
Cautions / Precautions
- Complete the full dose even if symptoms improve
- Take with food for maximum effectiveness
- Seek medical care if:
- Fever persists
- Symptoms worsen
- Repeated vomiting occurs
- Signs of severe malaria develop
- Use carefully during pregnancy and breastfeeding under medical advice
